D E S C R I P T I O N

The Knysna area is well known for its indigenous forests and its name is believed to have originated from the Khoi word meaning "place of wood" or "fern leaves". Others believe that the word actually means "straight down" referring to the two cliffs which form the entrance to the lagoon. George Rex, one of the first settlers, founded the town in 1804 and owned most of the land surrounding the lagoon. He eventually established Knysna as a port, which facilitated the trade in timber. Nowadays Knysna is a proverbial playground with something to offer everyone. Some of the main attractions include the lagoon and it's imposing heads, the cozy town and of course the lush forests. These attractions provide many activities such as hiking, water-skiing, fishing, and socializing...the list is endless. Knysna is also home to the Knysna seahorse, Knysna Loerie, the Pansy shell and last but not least the world renowned mouth-watering Knysna Oyster. But don't go wandering alone in the forests for you might have an encounter with the last remaining Knysna elephant located somewhere in the forests!
