The Swartland is synonymous with wheat-fields and sheep farming (wheat has been grown here since 1752!). The major towns in the region include Malmesbury, Darling, Moorreesburg, Riebeek-Kasteel and Riebeek-Wes. Malmesbury, the largest town, is well known for its golden wheat-fields and vineyards. Darling is definitely THE destination for flower lovers: there are four wild flower reserves in the area and it hosts an annual wild flower show in September. More than 300 wild flower species bloom in spring and natures own colourful carpets will astound you. Moorreesburg offers a variety of activities, such as: 4x4 trails/routs, bird watching, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, mountain biking, cycling and golf. Riebeek-Kasteel and Riebeek-Wes are two picturesque villages at the foot of the only mountain in the area where luscious vineyards stretch over the hills to display green to red-brown colours, depending on the season. Take the footpath op the mountain and check out the view!
