The Witzenberg region is characterized by soaring mountains, clear streams and green valleys. The small town of Wolseley is located on the watershed between the Breede River, which flows towards the Indian ocean, and the Little Berg River, a tributary of the Berg River, which flows towards the Atlantic. The Witzenberg region is well known as the most important fruit growing centre in South Africa. A variety of fruit, such as apples, peaches, plums, pears, cherries, nectarines and apricots, are grown for the domestic and export market and two of the country's best known fruit juice brands are packed in the town Ceres. Besides being an important agricultural region, the mountains offer many activities such as 4x4, mountain biking, horse and hiking trails, fly fishing and plenty holiday cottages. The mountains receive snowfalls during the winter months, which at times can be heavy enough to be exploited by crazy locals with skis and snowboards in the garage (probably mementos from an European ski trip).
